Career Day is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Petoskey in collaboration with Petoskey Middle School. At this event, approximately 50 different careers are represented by local business people. The eighth grade students sign up for four, half-hour sessions with the various representatives. The career choices range from veterinarian to EMS employee to accountant to yoga instructor to fire fighter to chef and the list goes on. For the past three years, mediator and board member Cyndy Tonkavich has facilitated the sessions with the students. As a retired school teacher, Cyndy brings not only her experience as an educator, but also her enthusiasm for the event.
In 2025, however, Northern Community Mediation began expanding the program to include other schools. As a result, Cyndy became the contact person for the schools in Charlevoix County, and mediator Katie Allen, also a retired teacher, took on the responsibilities for the Emmet County schools. As a result, NCM now offers the service not only to Petoskey Middle School students, but also to East Jordan and Harbor Springs students.
